I generally think of Homer’s description of dawn as “rosy fingered” when I look at a photo like this. But this morning I thought of “America the Beautiful,” though as you can see I am a long ways from “amber waves of grain” and “fruited plain[s].”
Frankly, in the dim predawn light, I was worried about rattle snakes and scorpions, though I had convinced myself that snakes would be brumating, which is science talk for taking the winter off.
Scorpions? Do they take time off?
