05-06-13 Alien Landscape

2013 05-06 Alien Landscape Of course, this view of the distant Los Angeles skyline, taken from the Hollywood Bowl overlook just off of Mulholland Drive, isn't alien to the denizens of LA. But to a flatlander in a relatively rural state (with little or no air pollution) this landscape is certainly foreign.

That's not to say that it isn't enticing and interesting to me. In fact, once I played with an HDR setting in my OnOne software, there was amazing detail and texture in this scene. I see things here that I never see in my home state of South Dakota.

By the way, in researching this post, I discovered that California is our most populous state and it is the third largest. South Dakota is 46th in population (out of 50) and we are the 17th largest in square miles. California has twice South Dakota's area but it has 35 times more people.

03-24-10 Hollywood Hills

Amidst the concrete jungle of LA there exists an occasional green oasis, including this beautiful hilltop, illuminated by the morning sun. Below this hill lies the Hollywood Freeway. And if you looked up from the spot, you would see the smog-shrouded city. (click) (If you've looked at the linked photo, that's Hollywood in the foreground. The round building is Capitol Records.)

04-06-09 J Paul Getty Center

By Scott Shephard

The J. Paul Getty Center north of Los Angeles is a remarkable place. It is filled with great art, including Van Gogh's painting of purple irises. But if there were no art at all, it would still be a place worth visiting. I know very little about architectural psychology but I would say that both the indoor and outdoor spaces of this complex are very "human." Or maybe humane.

The clean, white structure and the rough, stone contrast very well with the green grass and the deep blue sky. Los Angeles was clouded in smog but this place seemed very pure to me.
