24.05.09 Council Grounds State Park (Wisconsin)

By Scott Shephard

In case you were trying to visualize our “camping,” here’s a photo I took yesterday morning. This camp ground is just outside of Merrill, Wisconsin, and is fairly typical as far as state park campgrounds are concerned. Most of these campgrounds were built long before Americans started to upsize their campers to feel more like home. Washers and dryers? Electric fireplaces? Three televisions? Electric recliners? Two refrigerators? Two bathrooms? Why not?! I don’t think Council Grounds would accommodate something like this.

As you can perhaps see, our camper is small. An RV salesman would call it a “couples camper.” It is 23’ long, 7’ wide, has 1 refrigerator, 1 (32”) TV, a cozy 54” x 72” bed (a “camper queen”), 1 toilet, and no fireplace. It’s perfect.

Council Grounds has 52 camp sites but on this particular day there were only two of us camping here, partly because it was a Tuesday in early May and partly because the water was shut off and the toilets were closed. But we carry our own water supply and, as I’ve said, we have a toilet. Perfect.
