Butterfly - Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden (Miami, FL)

On our short stay in Miami, Deb and I ventured to the Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden, which is a few miles south of the city center. Besides plants, flowers and trees, the garden has a butterfly house. It features species from all over the world and humans in this beautiful enclosed space are vastly outnumbered by the butterflies.

The problem with butterflies is that they tend to be in constant motion - they rarely politely pose for pictures. I tried 20 times to get a “keeper” and this is as close as I came. It turns out that the auto setting on my camera used a shutter speed that was a bit slow but that was OK in that the faint blur in this butterfly’s wings imply motion. When it comes to photographing lepidoptera, it is better to lucky than good. And least in my case . . .
