19.11.26 A Taste of Winter

By Scott Shephard

The Greek philosopher Heraclitus said that you can’t put your foot in the same stream twice because the stream is in a constant state of change. He was talking about the invisible, atomic characteristics of water I think. And that’s too deep for me.

Even if you can’t step in the same stream more than once you can return to the same spot on a stream again and again and again. My photos prove that. I have photographed this spot countless times. And on this day (23 November 2019) I saw something I hadn’t seen before - ice. So naturally I had to take some photos.

To take a photo like this, I have to find a few stable rocks for my feet and my tripod. When the rocks are dry, that can be a challenge as I’m not as fit and well-balanced as I once was. Last Friday, the rocks were fringed with ice and covered with a light dusting of snow. So that made getting a decent photo a little riskier. I was well aware of the fact that if I fell and couldn’t get up, I had no cell coverage and, because Deb was in Virginia, there was no one who had even the slightest clue of where I was. So I took a few photos where I could and hurried back to the cabin to see what developed. I kind of like this one . . . .
