12-18-16 Agricultural Art

By Scott Shephard

I suspect that when a farmer plows a field at the end of the season, the greatest satisfaction comes in knowing that the task is completed. But for me, the photographer, the satisfaction comes in seeing the lines, texture and contrast (and maybe even art) in what the farmer has done.

This photo is a good example of what I call "road hunting": I get my camera ready, drive around in the country and look for something worth capturing. This photo is made possible, incidentally, by the light dusting of snow that has helped show off the farmer's good work.

Is this art? Does it have meaning? You'll have to answer those questions. But as I look at this photo, I realize that it is at least symbolic: to me it's all about hope.
