05-21-14 Narcissus

These flowers are commonly known as daffodils where I come from but the Latin name is "narcissus." Besides being a flower, Narcissus, as you may know, was also the name of the handsome hunter in Greek mythology who became so enraptured with his own reflection in a pond that he couldn't leave and thus starved to death.

This narcissus is beautiful but decidedly un-selfconcious. (Or at least it seems that way.)

The narcissus (aka daffodil) is a symbol of rebirth and regeneration and I guess that's appropriate in South Dakota, where warmer days tantalize us with the promise of summer.
