04-12-18 Monolith
By Scott Shephard
If you search for "Chimney Rock - Colorado," you will have to work hard to find a reference to this monolith, which is labeled Chimney Rock in my mapping software. The other Chimney Rock, which shows up in searches, is a national monument. This chimney rock just sits at the junction of US160 and US491 in the southwest corner of Colorado as a kind of road side marker.
At the border of Colorado, as we entered from Arizona, we were met with a sign that read, "Welcome to Colorado - The Colorful State." The sign was tan with brown lettering. And the landscape was almost completely brown as well. I'm not making fun of a sign that might seem paradoxical to some. After all, brown is a color. And how can you not like all of the shades of brown displayed here along with all of the textures of erosional forces? The deep blue sky also works well as a backdrop.
